5 TYPES OF GRIEF AND LOSS TO UNDERSTAND

01. NON-DEATH LOSS AND GRIEF CAN ENCOMPASS THE SAME COMMANDING AND PAINFUL FEELINGS THAT GRIEF EXPERIENCED THROUGH DEATH MAY AROUSE. YOU CAN GRIEVE THE LSOS OF ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT TO YOUR PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, SPIRITUAL AND INTERPERSONAL LIFE. SOME EXAMPLES ARE: MOVING, ILLNESS, BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS, JOB LOSS AND RETIREMENT.

02. SECONDARY LOSS OCCUR WHEN A LOSS AFFECTS SEVERAL AREAS OF YOUR LIFE. THESE ARE SECOND TO THE PRIMARY LSOS OF A LOVED ONE. YOU’RE GRIEVING THE LSOS BUT ALSO THE HOPES, DREAMS, WISHES, UNFULFILLED EXPECTATIONS AND ROLES THEY DID OR WOULD HAVE FILLED IN YOUR LIFE. FOR EXAMPLE, CHANGE IN RELATIONSHIPS, LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF HOME, LOSS OF FINANCIAL SECURITY, LIFESTYLE.

03. CUMULATIVE GRIEF REFERS TO THE EXPERIENCE OF SUFFERING A NEW LOSS BEFORE YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO GRIEVE A FIRST LOSS, OR SUFFERING MULTIPLE LOSSES IN QUICK SUCCESSION. WHEN YOU ENCOUNTER ONE LOSS AFTER ANOTHER, UNADDRESSED GRIEF CAN BE COMPOUNDED. IT CAN FEEL OVERWHELMING, CHALLENGING AND CAN FEEL AS THOUGH LIFE IS CRUMBLING TO PIECES.

04. ANTICIPATORY GRIEF IS A GRIEF THAT OCCURS BEFORE AN IMPENDING LOSS. IT IS A STATE OF DEEP, PAINFUL SORROW. IT CAN AFFECT PEOPLE FACING AN IMMINENT DEATH OF A LOVED ONE OR THEIR OWN DEATH. ANTICIPATORY GRIEF DOESN’T MEAN THAT YOU WILL GRIEVE ANY LESS. IT JUST MAY MEAN YOU’LL PROCESS ELEMENTS OF THE LOSS MORE SLOWLY AND OVERTIME.

05. DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF IS WHEN YOU FEEL DENIED THE RIGHT TO GRIEVE BY FAMILY, FRIENDS, OR SOCIETY. DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF IS DEEP GRIEF YOU FEEL OVER THE LOSS OF A RELATIONSHIP THAT IS OUTSIDE THE TYPICAL FAMILY STRUCTURE OR OTHER RECOGNIZED RELATIONSHPS. WHEN A LOSS IS DISENFRANCHISED, IT MEANS THAT YOU ARE NOT GETTING THE SUPPORT OR VALIDATION YOU NEED.
