So many of us are feeling the loss of Dolly Parton.
She was an extraordinary talent, but her legacy is about so much more than music. She had a heart for God and for people. She seemed to have a beautiful simplicity about what mattered most: work hard, stay grateful, love people, keep your faith, and help where you can.
Ms. Parton had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen. She brought joy to so many, and she used her success to give generously, especially to children and families. Even with all she accomplished, she never seemed to forget where she came from.
For those of us who work with grief, we know that loss isn’t only about the people we personally knew.
Sometimes we grieve the loss of a voice, a presence, a generation, or someone whose goodness became part of the landscape of our lives.
Dolly’s words, “I will always love you,” feel especially meaningful now.
Perhaps that is part of what remains when someone we love – or someone who has touched our lives from afar – is gone.
Love remains.
