Advent Prayers: Week One – Hope

We have entered into the season of Advent, a time of prayer and hopeful anticipation. One of the most recognizable symbols of the season is the Advent wreath. The hope of the wreath itself, being a circle, has no beginning and no end thus symbolizing the eternal nature of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. The four candles on the wreath is the tension between light and darkness. Each week when a new candle is lit, the darkness is pushed aside as the light gradually increases. The evergreens of the wreath remind us that the season we celebrate brings hope and new life.

Heavenly Father, this morning, we come before you filled with hope. Hope that comes from believing in the promise that you will never give up on us or this world. Hope that comes from knowing Jesus, who on Christmas day broke into the darkness and brought light, love, and joy into the world. Lord, each year, during the Advent season, you invite us to take time and prepare our hearts, minds and souls for the arrival of the greatest gift ever given. That first Christmas, you gave us the gift of hope wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. Thank you, Father, for your immeasurable gift. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.
